Hello parents and guardians of grade 7, 8, and 9 and welcome back to another year at Oyster Pond Academy! The following document will outline some topics and themes as well as assessment strategies that will be used throughout the school year. Please follow my website for update on homework, class activities and due dates.
All subject areas taught throughout Nova Scotia are outlined in subject appropriate curriculum documents. All curriculum documents are available through the Nova Scotia Department of Education.
Google Classroom: All junior high students are enrolled on my online Google Classroom. Here students will find upcoming announcements, assignments and due dates. Google classroom can also support students who are absent keep up to date with notes or assignments they have missed.
English Language Arts:
In Language Arts, students spend time reading, writing, speaking, listening and studying various aspects of the English Language. The workshop model will be used whenever possible, whereby a short mini-lesson (10-15 Minutes) on specific strategies and techniques will be taught regarding reading and writing, then students will have an opportunity to address, engage with, and transfer these strategies to their own reading and writing process.
Students are asked to have a separate folder/binder for reading and writing workshop that they can leave in the classroom.
Activities this year will include but are not limited to…
Reading Workshops: Independent Reading and comprehension activities, Guided Reading, Shared Reading, Book Circles, Novel Study and Book Talks.
Reading strategies to be covered include
This text will be used as a model to allow students to learn how to interact with a novel in a variety of ways. The students will also be given an opportunity to choose their own novel and will be expected to demonstrate their learning and understanding of that novel.
Writing Workshop: Guided writing (the writing process), Independent writing, conferencing and investigating different writing styles
Genres being investigated include, but are not limited to…
Students will be expected to conference with the teacher as well as with their peers. Students will also give feedback to each other throughout the writing process.
Mini-lessons will be kept by the students and should be used as a reference for writing skills and techniques.
Assessment/Evaluation:
A variety of both formative (while learning) and summative assessment/evaluation tools will be used throughout the school year to assess/evaluate your child. Assessments/evaluations will be consistent with curriculum objectives and will illustrate your child’s strengths and needs as well as the effectiveness of my teaching approach.
Your child will be assessed/evaluated using:
1 - Limited knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Limited application of related skills.
2 - Developing knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Developing in the application of the related skills.
3 - Competent knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Appropriate application of related skills.
4 - In-depth knowledge and understanding of context and concepts. Able to extend the application of related skills.
